From a championship win to the Shaw Brothers
He was born on 24 September 1945 in Guangdong. He began training in monkey-style kung fu at the age of nine under Chan Sau Chung, and it was a genuine martial arts record rather than an acting one that brought him to film: after winning a lightweight championship at Singapore’s National Skills Competition in 1969, filmmakers noticed him.
He started as a stuntman and action director, working on Chor Yuen’s Cold Blade in 1970, and signed with the Shaw Brothers studio in November 1971. He became one of the first professionally trained martial artists the company put under contract, at a moment when that distinction still meant something on screen.
The Boxer from Shantung
The Boxer from Shantung (1972) took more than HK$2 million and made him a star immediately. Around eighty films for the studio followed.
