She studied at the Academy of San Carlos from 1943 to 1947, mornings for art and afternoons for dance. When her family moved to Cuba in 1947 she continued at the San Alejandro Academy, where she met Wifredo Lam. She returned to Mexico in 1949 and enrolled at La Esmeralda.
That same year she won first prize at the Fine Arts Salon in Havana and was invited to join the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana. She was 23.
Seventy years of work
Her sculpture returned again and again to the female form in modular shapes, working through love, loneliness and motherhood. She held more than twenty solo exhibitions and took part in some fifty group shows, and won first prize for sculpture at Gabrovo, Bulgaria, in 1985.
