A farmhouse at Bose

He was born on 3 March 1943 in Castel Boglione. He took a diploma in accountancy and studied economics at the University of Turin — an unlikely route into monastic life.

In late 1965 he moved alone into an isolated farmhouse in the hamlet of Bose, in Magnano. The community formed properly in October 1968, with two Catholics, a Protestant minister and a lay Protestant woman. That composition was the point: he wrote a rule welcoming men and women, Catholic and Protestant, who would live in community, keep celibacy, and give themselves to prayer and work.

He was prior from 1965 until 2017, announcing his resignation on 26 December 2016 and standing down on 25 January 2017. Luciano Manicardi succeeded him.

Rome, and the separation

He was trusted in Rome for most of his life. He joined a papal delegation carrying a sixteenth-century icon to the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2004, was appointed an expert to the Synod of Bishops in 2008, 2012 and 2018, and was made a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity in July 2014.

The end was harder. An apostolic visitation examined the community’s governance between December 2019 and January 2020, and in May 2020 a Vatican decree ordered him to separate from the community he had founded.
